“an exceptional sense of groove

José Antonio García López, Tomajazz

Michael formed his All Star band with some of Portugal’s best jazz musicians to continue performing the hard bop he loves. The repertoire covers music made famous by musicians such as Bobby Timmons, Lee Morgan and Hoagy Carmichael, as well as music composed by Michael and other members of his band.

Michael Lauren is supported by: Yamaha, Zildjian, Remo & Road Crew.

Driven by Internationally recognized Drummer/Educator Michael Lauren, The Michael Lauren All Stars consist of some of Portugal’s finest jazz musicians playing accessible contemporary hard bop. Their debut album, “Once Upon A Time In Portugal” selected as one of the 10 Best National Albums of 2016 (Arte Sonora), is swinging, passionate and dynamic.

“effort, talent and creative originality”  José Antonio García López, Tomajazz

“For Michael Lauren, ‘It don’t mean a thing…’ are words to live by” – Illya Stemkovsky, Modern Drummer Magazine

“Exciting music, rooted in the hard bop tradition without being mired in the past”.  – Mark Sullivan, All About Jazz

“Michael Lauren is a master of time. You will be awed by Lauren’s ability to play in the pocket, while consistently referencing melody.” Raul da Gama, Jazz da Gama

The Postcard Brass Band is not your typical quartet. It is a band that challenges the established concepts of what a modern music listener generally hears from an ensemble of this size. Instead of one type of repertoire, the eclectic Postcard Brass Band plays a variety of musical styles.

From the music of Henry Mancini, John Zorn, and Wayne Shorter, to Macedonia popular songs, traditional Dixieland and funk, all forms of music are possible with this quartet. Playing instrumental music only, The Postcard Brass Band breaks the boundaries of commercial music by violating the usual three and a half minute song.  This is an improvising unit.

With New York drummer Michael Lauren and the tuba phenomenon, Sérgio Carolino, and because there is no harmonic instrumentation, the musical journeys that these musicians undertake is a real challenge for saxophonist Mário Marques and the trombonist Ruben Santos, who must reach deep into their intuitive musical capabilities, due to this lack of chordal support.

Their first album, released in 2007 (The Postcard Brass Band), was applauded by the critics. The band’s 2nd CD POP & ROLL was awarded the “2012 Roger Bobo Award Prize for Excellence in Recording” – Category Jazz / Commercial / Pop, delivered on 25 May 2012 at the Bruckner Hall in the city of Linz, Austria.

“Pop and Roll is an amazingly diverse album” – Thomas J. Ricer, DMA, Yamaha Performing Artist

“There are attributes that are key for me in music: joy, emotion, humor, surprise and the genius. They are all found in Pop & Roll… an extraordinary listening experience!”Jorge Prendas, Composer, Director of Educational Service Casa da Música
